Happy Valentine's Day! (Did You Get Your Box of Candy?)

Happy Valentine's Day from our family to yours!

In what has become a yearly tradition, Rowan received a heart-shaped box of candy along with his valentine from us.

How could we resist? He love love loves Valentine's Day. And to him, a heart-shaped box of candy is the ideal gift.

Remember this video from last year around Valentine's Day?

We hope you have a love-filled day and receive whatever your little heart desires this year!

"Reuse Is Better Than Recycle"

My son has a frustrating habit of stealing things out of our recycling bin. He uses the items to make art projects, "machines" and — most recently — musical instruments.

He might make a mess, but I love his creativity! And I suppose he's right. Reusing is better than recycling.

Notice Anything Odd in This Video?

Anything? Anything at all?

Here's a hint: Not everyone in this video is sledding. Notice the cross-country skier going by after the guys make it down the hill?

Does it strike you as odd that a park would allow people to sled down a hill that crosses the beginner skiing trail?

In case you're wondering, we did see a kid crash directly into a novice skier. The woman saw the boy coming at the last minute, but was too inexperienced to propel herself forward quickly enough to avoid impact. No one was hurt, thank goodness, but I couldn't help but question a design that puts sledding children and novice skiers on a perpendicular collision course.

Still, we had a great time!

How My Boy Makes Art

Sounds effects...intense dialogue...BAD GUYS!

That's right, people. When my kid is making art, don't expect to see pretty flowers or neatly filled in coloring pages. According to him, that stuff is "boooooring!"

Unfortunately, he's a bit of a temperamental artist — fiercely protective of his creative process. I'll have to be sneakier if I want to capture more of his unorthodox methods.

A Special Christmas Wish

Rowan and Maddox visited Santa this past weekend. Rowan asked for a race track, and Maddox asked for...well...let's just say that Maddox is a big fan of the Toy Story movies.

I think he got tired of watching us crack up each time he repeated his wish list. He had no idea why we were laughing, but it didn't take long for him to discover that "guitar" prompted fewer smirks from the grownups.

Too Cute for Words

If you ever need a one-day break from blogging, just dig up an impossibly cute video of your adorable nephews.

It works for me!

Caught Learning!

Ask Rowan what he learns at preschool, and he'll happily tell you.

"Nothing," he'll say with a sly little grin. "I learn NOTHING at preschool!"

Oh yeah, little punk? Now I have evidence! You can't fool me anymore. No siree.

Consider yourself caught in the act of learning!

On Being Good and Telling the Truth

Children provide such a fascinating window in to human nature. You can almost see their little minds processing life's most basic questions: "Should I be mean or nice? Should I be truthful or tell a little white lie?"

It's rare when you can capture their moral dilemmas on camera. But it sure is hilarious when you do!

Rowan on being nice and good.

Maddox on telling the truth.

The Sea Lion

Because Rowan is talking in his fast/high excited voice, I transcribed the conversation to help you follow along:

Rowan: Well, this is my sea lion and...

Me: Now wait a minute. What are you telling me about here?

Rowan: This is my sea lion made of your jewelry. And this is its nose, and it's holding a ball on its nose. See?

Me: That's cool. So did you make this?

Rowan: Yeah. Out of your jewelry. [If Rowan thinks that this is my jewelry, Kyle better buy me some nicer stuff! HA!]

Me: That's cool. Why did you decide that it's a sea lion?

Rowan: Because LOOK. See that? A ball on his nose? A tail like that! That's a sea lion. Except...it's not like a normal sea lion. It has a spot where water comes out.

Me: Oh, it has a spot where water comes out, so it's not like a normal sea lion?

Rowan: Nope, it's just like a fake sea lion. See that?

Me: Cool. K, give us a smile!

Awesome Auger

We now receive a kid's station, Qubo, that plays short infomercials between cartoons. So far, Rowan has asked for the Awesome Auger and the Perfect Brownie Pan. Hmmm...maybe it's time to tell Rowan that we don't have that station anymore? ;)

Love, Rowan Style

Time to return to blogland!

Since it's the season of love, I give you Rowan's take on Valentine's Day (now known as "Heart Day" in the public schools, I'm told):

Wishing you lots of love AND candy this week,

Rowan's Obama Song

After (over)hearing information about this election for months, Rowan is quite excited that the big day has finally arrived. He's been singing about Barack Obama all morning! Even if you don't agree with our politics, you've got to appreciate the kid's enthusiasm.

Happy election day! Get out and VOTE!
